Diabetes related foot care
In Alberta, approximately 140,000 individuals have diabetes mellitus, while another 70,000 have the disease but have not yet been diagnosed.
Foot problems are a leading cause of hospitalization for Canadians who have been identified as having diabetes mellitus. Therefore, routine foot care in the prevention of diabetes-related complications is imperative. Common problems include infection, ulceration or gangrene that may lead to amputation. Most of these problems are preventable through proper care and regular visits to a podiatrist.
