Simple steps to good foot health

With May being Foot Health Awareness Month, it’s a good time to remember simple steps for taking good care of your feet.

  • Wash and inspect your feet every day.
  • Choose only shoes that feel comfortable.
  • Wear shoes that are appropriate for the activity you are performing (e.g. running shoes for running; hiking shoes for hiking). When the shoes don’t fit the activity, problems can develop quickly.
  • Buy a quality brand of shoe that feels comfortable.
  • Break new shoes in gradually and replace them when they lose their shock absorbing ability (about every 600-800 kilometres).
  • Exercise daily to help maintain circulation and muscle tone.
  • Avoid crossing your legs – crossing your legs increases the pressure on the nerves and blood vessels.

You only have one pair of feet to last a lifetime.  Make sure you take good care of them.
